History Takes Flight presents compelling stories of US military and aviation history, through the eyes and interpretations of four Nebraska artists. This exhibit highlights artwork from Howard Gaebel, Mike Hagel, Jim Horan, and Russ Weidner. These artists all have unique and distinct styles, inspired by various life experiences or personal interest, yet all these works show interpretations of military and aviation history.
Mike Hagel is the brother of Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel and is the most known artist of the four artists exhibiting works. Hagel is one of the founding members of the Midwest Group of the U.S. Air Force Art Program formed in 1977. Hagel has 10 paintings in the Air Force collection and one painting, Simpson Harbor, hangs in the outer office of the Pentagon in Secretary of Defense, Chuck Hagel’s, office. The exhibit will feature a print of Simpson Harbor.
